Hello/Intro ImmigratReturn to index of stories... |
Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. Unless you're a native American, you're an immigrant or a descendant of one. Americans tend to hold sacred their country's historical dependence on the hard work and innovation of immigrants. Today, the issue of immigration tends to make headlines in other ways. Lawmakers at every level are considering ways to reform what some call inadequate immigration policies. It's become a political hot-potato for many in Washington and Concord. A little more than 4-% of those living in NH are immigrants - according to the latest Census figures. And that number is growing. We'll explore some of the issues facing immigrants and refugees in New Hampshire in a moment. But first, Outlook's Phil Vaughn had the chance to meet a refugee family from Bedford and hear how things have been going for them. |

A number of businesses say they rely on Immigrants -- in some cases undocumented workers -- to fill jobs others don't want. That argument doesn't sit well with Republican Andy Renzullo of Hudson who has spearheaded immigration reform bills in the Legislature. Rep Renzullo says how can entry-level workers compete with someone willing to work for less than minimum wage in an underground economy. It's a common heard refrain. Q What about the argument that illegal aliens are taking jobs away from New Hampshire citizens? |
Social Services Return to index of stories... |
Another common issue raised: The strain on SOCIAL Services. Representaive RenZU-llo says our safety net has become a trampoline. Rep Ren-ZU-llo says Social Services are already under a heavy strain -- and as you add more and more illegals into the system -- it's going to break. Q NABIL: Maj Leader Sen Bob Clegg says uninsured Alien workers place a huge BURDEN on state's health care system -- many of whom are in low wage jobs that don't offer benefits |
